the North Gloucestershire Foursomes League

- A Potted History -

 

§    The records show that the league was first contested in 1955 between Cotswold Hills, Minchinhampton, Cirencester and Lilley Brook

 

§    Painswick joined the league in 1967

 

§    Broadway and Stinchcombe Hill joined in 1968

 

§    Ross on Wye joined in 1970

 

§    Cirencester did not contest in 1971, but re-joined the following year

 

§    Ross on Wye did not contest in 1974

 

§    In 1976 Lydney and Coleford joined the league and two divisions were played – the main one as Foursomes, the second division as Fourball. However, Lydney only played in the second division

 

§    The biggest change took place in 1978 when Cleeve Cloud, Gloucester and Tewkesbury Park joined, and the league was played as two Foursomes divisions

 

§    Amberley (now Minchinhampton Old) joined in 1979

 

§    Gloucester did not contest from 1983 to 1985, rejoining in 1986

 

§    Ross on Wye rejoined in 1984

 

§    Cotswold Edge joined in 1986

 

§    The current Chairman, Arthur Hughes-Hunt, was elected in 1988

 

§    Alan Cale was elected Secretary in 1991

 

§    Forest Hills joined in 1993, and won the second division at their first attempt!

 

§    The first NGFL Cup (donated by Arthur Hughes-Hunt and Alan Cale) was played at Broadway on 16 October 1994, and was won by Minchinhampton

 

§    The next major change took place in 1997 when Puckrup Hall, Brickhampton and Naunton Downs joined, and the league was split into three divisions of six teams.

 

§    Rodway Hill joined the league in 2003, but had to withdraw halfway through the following season

 

§    South Cerney joined the league in 2005, but had to withdraw halfway through the following season.
